I haven't experienced that freeze out so consistently as I did trying to get into advertising. From top to bottom. All levels. I remember sitting in class listening guest speakers from this agency or that agency and every time like clockwork they'd either hand out or tell us to grab their cards or write down their info. If you guys have any questions... email us!

They can't even be bothered to respond to that fuckin email. I guess coming to speak to the class and running that bullshit was an ad itself or maybe the professor called in a favor. I called out some professors on it. They didn't really have any legit counter. One of them was kind enough to call the agency up personally and say hey one of my students (from LAST MONTH...MONTH!) sent you an email. Respond to that shit or don't come back here. A capiche? Even other places I've taken tours and cards just can't be bothered.

Busy is busy. I get that some people get 300+ emails a day, but when that happens once, twice, 15 times I'm calling BS. Just leave student presentation/Q&As alone.

Asked a CD at Ogilvy, "so how do I get a job here as an AD." "Um... winning lots of awards helps ... winning contests." Oh okay. Well I've been doing this all wrong. kthxbai

-PS- no Source Awards or Essence Awards... It is even more unacceptable, however, when advertising executives such as Petra Bravencova’ hit the like button on such racist memes on social media. (See attached) Bravencova’ is head of ad operations for Luxia Global Media, a UK start up that aims to create engagement platforms for premium brands at hotels.

On the surface, the Chinese seem relatively content and well-to-do, with British Chinese pupils regularly outperforming their classmates and Chinese men more likely than any other ethnic group to be in a professional job. Consequently, we are often overlooked in talks on racism in advertising.

Clearly, academic and economic successes do not negate marginalisation by advertising executives such as Bravencova’.

Chinese Britons are often referred to as a silent minority. While we are the fourth-largest minority ethnic group in the UK, we are virtually invisible in public life, especially in media and advertising campaigns, except when poked fun at.
Petra Bravencova’ joined 55,000 people to perpetuate the very images that evoke stereotypes and cultural misunderstandings. Chinese consumers are outraged at the portrayal of East Asians in such forums and this must stop.
Racism is one of those horrendous, soul and confidence crushing things that, when faced with, we would all rather pretend did not exist. It is sad when someone who represents brands via social media likes racist memes and laughs along with the rest.
Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11279250.post-8725868046825227112016-01-25T10:01:20.230-06:002016-01-25T10:01:20.230-06:00@Boston

It was the first time I had really seen them in an office setting up close. The dog they had when I went was big as hell. Someone in our group tripped over his bowl and fell on the floor. It just didn't make sense to me.

Also, at the time there was only 1 black person there (a brother, hipster clone). Guess he bounced or got bounced. My tour group was all white except for a sister (a then friend). We both applied to open spots and didn't get a response.

I once heard from law enforcement that 5 years is a lifetime in organized crime, I wonder if the same can be said of advertising. I've also heard a saying that goes, "5 years in NYC is worth twice as much anywhere else." (again in terms of advertising)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11279250.post-3202937355353328102016-01-25T01:06:58.137-06:002016-01-25T01:06:58.137-06:00I've wondered about the Black Diversity Office...I've wondered about the Black Diversity Officer thing too. It's always someone black, and it's always someone ineffective with absolutely no hiring power.

In the ad industry, it's the SEMBLANCE of Black Diversity Officers. Scratch the surface and it's always one black person dividing their time between several ad agencies, with a business card (but no hiring authority, say or actual accomplishments) for each one.

But DAMN do they show up in diversity brochures and annual reports! I swear, these people have no say on who gets promoted or hired or have any influence on real diversity in the grand scheme of things. This is some real bizarre and fishy stuff. Dont believe me go on linkedin and search "diversity officer" or "head of diversity". When the pressure gets turned up, all of a sudden a black figure head emerges and will defend that corporation to the death and claim that they are actively trying to diversify their workforce.

As far as the oscars goes, black people must decide if they still want to play the game of begging for acceptance or just create their own outlets for creativity with their own award shows. I always find the industries that claim to be the most liberal and accepting of diversity to have the worst records when it comes to diversity and inclusion. Hollywood, tech industry & The ad industry is filled with fake hipster liberals, but walk one day in their office youll find they treat animals (Especially dogs) and plants better then the 1 or 2 minorities that sweep the floor and work the front desk. For example: http://www.bigspaceship.com/people/ ---> no blacks but they have tons of dogs in the office.ManDownnoreply@blogger.com
