Detroit isn’t the advertising mecca it used to be. Despite that, this summer, Mike Jackson, a former GM marketing head, and Gary Topolewski, a onetime chief creative officer at BBDO in Detroit, teamed up with consultant Randy Easterbrook to set up shop in the city’s artsy midtown. Together, they’re doing project-based work for clients like the Ahee family, philanthropists who have a Grosse Pointe, Mich., jewelry business and stakes in diamond mines abroad, while also courting businesses with sticky image problems, like car dealers. Their target for growth? Creating 30 jobs over the next three years, Jackson said.
