2 Great White Sharks Spotted Off California Beaches

By David Goodhue — AHN Reporter

Santa Cruz, CA (AHN) — Two great white shark sightings have been confirmed off the coast in central California.

Local media reports state that one of the sharks was filmed by a Capitola, Calif. man as the fish swam underneath the pier at Seacliff State Beach. A shark researcher confirmed the shark was a great white. It was thought to be a juvenile about 10 feet long.

Sean Van Sommeran, a scientist with the Pelagic Shark Research Foundation, spotted another great white while flying in a helicopter just a few miles south of where the younger shark was seen.

The shark was a female, he said, and is about 16 feet long.

Shark experts say it’s not unusual to see great white sharks off Santa Cruz this time of year.
