13000: Delayed WTF 32—Creativity 50 + 0.

MultiCultClassics is often occupied with real work. As a result, a handful of events occur without the expected blog commentary. This limited series—Delayed WTF—seeks to make belated amends for the absence of malice.

Advertising Age presented “The Creativity 50 2015: The Most Creative People of the Year.” The list showed diversity, although there were no Black people recognized as “Advertising Innovators,” probably because the group remains grossly underrepresented—and is actually declining in numbers—in the field. Why was Ad Age able to identify creative Blacks across a variety of industries, yet unable to spot a worthy candidate on Madison Avenue? And how do the Blacks among The Creativity 50 2015 feel about that?

    Acceptable forms of diversity in advertising, in order of social acceptability:

    White woman

    White LGBT

    Exotic upper class foreigner of color, non-American

    Black/brown people from entertainment, DABBLING briefly in advertising (but god forbid not doing it full-time or professionally)

    White Brazilians

    Mixed-race American minorities

    American minorities, black men and women dead last.

    Exotic foreigner of color, non-American? Check, Indonesian.

    White Brazilian? Check.

    Anybody black? HELL NO.
