Digiday Media’s Worklife published a “definitive guide to what’s in and out for 2024.” The out column includes “Missing DE&I goals”—and the in column has no DE&I-related entries.
It’s not clear what “Missing DE&I goals” really means. Is “Missing” a verb, adverb, or adjective? In Adland, all three options apply.
As a verb, roughly 100% of White advertising agencies are missing—or failing to achieve—DE&I goals.
From an adverbial perspective, it could be a slang term, whereby DE&I goals are delegated to a Miss—ie, a resident woman of color.
The adjective angle applies to most White advertising agencies too, as their DE&I goals are missing—ie, they don’t even have any.
Hell, it could be a misspelling, and Worklife meant Messing DE&I goals.
Finally, for Adland, “Missing DE&I goals” should fall under the in column.
