8686: Building Stereotypes With Lowe’s.
Make The Logo Bigger examined the latest Lowe’s commercial, and argued it was another example of Madison Avenue’s propensity to show adult males as dim-witted wimps. The spot actually highlighted another industry-created phenomenon that MultiCultClassics noted last year: the unlikely coupling of nerdish men and hot women. Sure, Lowe’s sorta dressed down the wife character, but it’s hard to deny she’s way out of her commercial husband’s league. If this marriage happened in the real world, the dude would have to be earning serious money, which would negate the need for DIY home improvements via Lowe’s. What is motivating these fantastic relationship depictions? Place your bets on the likelihood of lecherous creative directors making casting calls in the hopes of hooking up with the talent during post-production. And hiring lame male actors helps to reduce any potential competition for the actress’ attention. All men are pigs. But admen are a special type of swine.
