8916: The Other Side Of Annie.

Considering the efforts of Popeyes and advertising agency GSD&M to deny public access to any commercials featuring Annie the Chicken Queen, one can’t help but wonder why the character is still hawking chicken. Clearly, the client and ad shop are not comfortable with consumer reactions to the culturally clueless creation.

Then there is Deidrie Henry, the woman portraying Annie. What is going through her mind with all the controversy? Henry is an accomplished and award-winning actress who has appeared in numerous TV shows, movies and stage performances. Her true persona sounds and acts nothing like the Chicken Queen, as evidenced by interviews and event appearances.

A peek at Henry’s resume shows she’s capable of delivering a variety of accents including Southern—which she obviously employs for the Louisiana-born Annie.

Henry can likely relate to Diane Amos, another professional thespian best known for playing a questionable figure—the Pine-Sol Lady.

The actress’ latest achievement is a part in the ultra-dramatic Beautiful Boy. The trailer features a short clip of Henry consoling Maria Bello, and it’s a safe bet she didn’t drop by to brag and dance over Popeyes beating KFC in a taste test.

In the end, Henry can’t be faulted for her fast food work. How many A-list actors and actresses have embarrassing commercials in their closet? The woman is probably just trying to make some money while gaining greater attention. Hell, if Henry becomes the next big thing in Hollywood, Popeyes and GSD&M might be forced to abandon her, as viewers would realize she’s an actress and connect her to other roles.

Until then, Annie the Chicken Queen will continue to feel like a descendant of Chicken George.
