9155: Inequality Or Out To Lunch?

At the luncheon saluting the 2011 Advertising Age Women to Watch, Ad Age Executive Editor Judann Pollack remarked, “The companies these women represent are among the most prominent in the world. So, it might be tempting to say that as a gender we have arrived. But in truth, we are only just starting, and that’s what this event is about.”

The Ad Age story on the event did not feature any other equality-related comments from the honorees. Perhaps they quietly agree with the 2010 Advertising Week panel of female executives who claimed the glass ceiling is no longer a problem in agencies.

Additionally, if the advertising industry is “only just starting” to achieve balanced gender representation, where are minorities on the road to inclusive progress? It might be tempting to say that Madison Avenue is fucked up. And that’s the truth.
