The Fourth of July presents Adland with opportunities for performative celebration; however, expect the industry’s ruling majority to take a pass.
It’s also unlikely that Black ERGs and Chief Diversity Officers will be delegated the task of commemorating—or even acknowledging—the significant contributions of Black Americans in milestone moments associated with Independence Day. Hell, there won’t even be suggestions to read The 1619 Project for cultural enlightenment.
Adland will take the day off and give no thought to DEIBA+ matters, prioritizing parades, pyrotechnics, and picnics over people of color.
The lack of accountability will extend through July 5th—and the 365 days following it.
