5967: Fees And Taxes.

Checking in on the news with a MultiCultClassics Monologue…

• News reports claim major airlines are allegedly seeking to improve customer service as they continue to boost fares and fees like second carry-on bag charges. The companies will probably impose a fee for every second positive customer service act.

• A Nevada judge dismissed the gun case against Jerry Lewis, who was packing a pistol in his luggage at a Las Vegas airport in July. Lewis claimed the gun was a gift that he had forgotten was in the luggage. Not sure what airlines would charge passengers for firearms in their second carry-on bag.

• Procter & Gamble is suing the government for $435 million, charging they were “erroneously and illegally assessed” in an IRS audit. That should make for a nice “stimulus” check.

5827: The Cartoon Lady Doth Protest Too Much.

Complaining about the news in a MultiCultClassics Monologue…

• Protestors wearing character costumes were arrested at Disneyland. The group was protesting Disney’s treatment of hotel workers, arguing for the health care benefits of 2,300 maids, bellhops, cooks and dishwashers. “Disneyland is being unfair with us because we’re fighting for our health care and they’re trying to take it away,” said one participant. “They’re trying to cut our hours and take away our seniority.” The protestors better hope the Disney negotiators don’t include all the evil queens and stepmothers.

• Now Jerry Lewis claims the gun cops found in his luggage at the Las Vegas airport last month was just a gift presented to him after the last Muscular Dystrophy Association telethon. Gee, and you thought Jerry’s Kids preferred receiving cash donations.

• Jackson Browne is suing John McCain for using his song, “Running On Empty,” without permission. McCain’s campaign created a commercial criticizing rival Barack Obama, and the tune was playing in the background. Browne joins ABBA and John Mellencamp, who also had to tell McCain to stop using their work in his campaigns. Maybe they can team up to create a music video blasting the Arizona senator.

• J.C. Penney 2Q profits dropped 36 percent. Walmart 2Q profits rose 17 percent. Limited Too has a limited time remaining in the U.S. market, as the retailer’s parent company plans to convert about 600 stores to its lower-priced Justice brand. That’s Too bad. Or maybe it’s Justice. Sorry, there are only Limited gags to milk from these news items.

Essay 4416

Watching paint dry in a MultiCultClassics Monologue…

• Mattel recalled 800,000 Chinese-made toys for excessive amounts of lead paint. It’s the third recall for the toymaker this summer. Maybe they should introduce a toy lead painter’s kit.

• Jerry Lewis is backpedaling over an anti-gay comment he made during his annual telethon. While performing a freestyle ramble with a cameraman, Lewis joked, “Oh, your family has come to see you. … You remember Bart, your older son. … Jesse, the illiterate faggot.” Lewis later said, “I apologize to anyone who was offended. … Everyone who knows me understands that I hold no prejudices in this regard. That something like this would distract from the true purpose of the telethon pains me deeply.” Next year’s telethon celebrity lineup will include Isaiah Washington and Sen. Larry Craig.
