Essay 1312

Borat’s Cyrbonics — that is, his butchering of the Cyrillic alphabet — is another example of the racial insults behind the character and movie. It’s no wonder that folks from Russia and Kazakhstan have taken offense. Imagine the reactions if Sacha Baron Cohen tried the same comedic angles in Brownface, Yellowface or Blackface.

Sorry, rafi.

The MultiCultClassics editorial board tends not to filter much, and this particular post is admittedly absurd.

Just trying to examine issues from various angles. When considering foreign officials’ decision to ban the film in Russia, it seemed appropriate to demonstrate that different audiences see different things when viewing the same image.

It’s perhaps an idealistic and delusional hope on our part, but people ought to consider why they are laughing so hard at this movie. The subliminal collateral damage seems pretty severe. But that’s just our opinion.

As always, every reader and response is appreciated.

All the best.
