Stanford Social Innovation Review published a perspective titled, “The Racism of the ‘Hard-to-Find’ Qualified Black Candidate Trope.” The article included the following:
The importance of hiring and promotion in the workforce makes the problematic trope of the “hard-to-find” qualified Black candidate more than just a stereotypical cliché: its damaging effects are an enduring racist cog in the wheel of progress.
Hey, in Adland, it’s not a trope—rather, it’s tripe. The lie ranks among the top excuses for sustaining systemic racism and intentional ignorance, ultimately inspiring heat shields that attempt to breed candidates via high schools of color, inner-city internships and embryonic recruitment. The truth is, being unqualified has never disqualified Whites from entering in the field. Never.
