Essay 375

Sporting events in a MultiCultClassics Monologue…

• Kendra Davis, wife of New York Knicks player Antonio Davis, was charged with misdemeanor battery and driving with a suspended license during a road-rage incident last year. Ms. Davis allegedly threw a coffee cup at another driver after a traffic-stop argument. She also was involved in a nasty spat with a fan at a game between the Knicks and Bulls in Chicago last month. Why isn’t NBA Commissioner David Stern ordering a season-long suspension and mandatory anger-management counseling?

• A gay-marriage ban failed in the Maryland House of Delegates. The Washington Post reported the House Speaker stopped the morning floor session upon discovering that Republicans had collected enough signatures to bring the measure up for debate. Angry Republican whip Anthony J. O’Donnell griped, “They stuffed us!” No comment.

• Now Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb is making racial accusations about Terrell Owens. Responding to Owens’ contention that the team would be better off with Brett Favre at quarterback, McNabb said, “That’s like me going out and saying, ‘Hey, if we had Steve Largent. If we had Joe Jurevicius.’ It was definitely a slap in the face to me. It was a slap in the face because, as deep as people want to go into it, it was Black-on-Black crime.” Actually, some of McNabb’s Chunky Soup spots with his mother could be categorized as Black-on-Black crimes.
