8258: New York Blackout.

New York, New York in a MultiCultClassics Monologue…

• During an interview with Don Imus, New York Governor David Paterson remarked he had no idea former Governor Eliot Spitzer was into hookers. “None at all. None, “ answered Paterson when asked if he had any clues regarding Spitzer’s hobby. Paterson was likely too distracted handling his own extramarital affairs to notice.

• A new report shows Black New Yorkers are harder hit by long-term unemployment than other racial and ethnic groups. However, the unemployment rate for Blacks working on Madison Avenue isn’t too bad—but only because there are so few Blacks employed on Madison Avenue to begin with.

7759: Changing Flight Plans.

Taking off in a MultiCultClassics Monologue…

• Dave Chappelle went nuts on a private jet, prompting the pilot to make an emergency landing. The comedian refused to put on his seatbelt and repeatedly entered the cockpit. A representative explained Chappelle experienced an adverse reaction to something he had eaten and needed to use the rest room, but the facilities on the jet were “not the kind he needed.” Maybe next time he should fly on Soul Plane.

• Ashley Dupre, the former call girl made famous by former New York Governor Eliot Spitzer, is now seeking a new career as a real estate broker. “New York City real estate has always been an interest of mine,” said Dupre. “It’s just something that I wanted to do. Where this goes is yet to be determined.” Insert your own punch line involving whorehouses.

6710: Polls And Politics (Prostitutes Too).

Odd opinions in a MultiCultClassics Monologue…

• A new poll indicates New Yorkers would prefer having Eliot Spitzer back as governor versus his successor, David Paterson. No word if people would also prefer to see Ashley Dupré as the first lady in the governor’s mansion.

• Rev. Jesse Jackson thinks the NAACP should act to help the struggling auto industry. This would mean helping the companies that cut spending with minority-owned advertising agencies, right?

• Discount retailer Filene’s Basement has “filened” for bankruptcy.

6703: Unsettling News.

Settlements and setbacks in a MultiCultClassics Monologue…

• New York Governor David Paterson cost taxpayers $300,000, as the state quietly settled a racial-discrimination lawsuit charging Paterson fired a White Senate photographer to replace him with a Black photographer. The alleged act took place in 2003 when Paterson was Senate minority leader. Gee, Paterson sometimes makes his predecessor, Eliot Spitzer, look like a Boy Scout.

• Under Armour Inc. is recalling over 200,000 athletic cups, citing the protective devices can break when hit, potentially causing serious injury. Exactly how do these things get safety-tested to begin with? The company probably employs ex-CIA personnel with torture expertise—or dominatrixes.

• The CEO of Monster.com saw his compensation decline 37 percent in 2008. Granted, he still collected $8.2 million, so it’s not like he’ll be trolling his company’s job listings anytime soon.

6685: Erotic And Obscene.

Saturday afternoon with a MultiCultClassics Monologue…

• Despite all the drama surrounding the Craigslist Killer, the creator of Craigslist said there are no plans to remove the “erotic” section from the site. The alleged murderer reportedly met his victim through the listing service. “Sometimes a bad guy of some sort tries to pull a fast one on our site,” said the Craigslist creator. “We don’t want it there, it’s wrong, and that’s why we have the help of the general community and the law enforcement community getting rid of things like that.” Right, let’s count on citizens like Eliot Spitzer and Larry Craig to police the site.

• General Motors picked up more bailout money; plus the automaker plans to dump the Pontiac brand. U.S. taxpayers’ investment in GM now totals $15.4 billion. That exceeds the amount of money U.S. taxpayers have spent on GM cars by about, oh, $15.4 billion.

6638: Patience Is A Virtue.

Not sure Eliot Spitzer would agree with this concept, as he’d expect to get quick service for his payment.

6628: Assorted Losers.

Transforming the news in a MultiCultClassics Monologue…

The Los Angeles Times reported General Motors’ money troubles are adversely affecting its ability to provide marketing firepower for movie tie-in partners. Even super-powered robots can’t transform GM into a financially stable company.

• Ex-New York Governor Eliot Spitzer spoke out on his infamous prostitution escapades. “Like most of us, I suppose, I’ve had flaws,” said Spitzer. “I’ve tried to think about it deeply, address it. There are no excuses. I have tried to address these gremlins, confront them.” Hey, if Ashley Dupré is a Gremlin, we can’t wait to see the Ghoulies.

• Reports show more and more companies are cutting back on employee healthcare benefits and 401(k) matches. Whatever happened to the notion that a company’s most important asset are its people?

• A new study shows 1-in-5 U.S. 4-year-olds is obese, with a higher rate among American Indian kids. Look for Mickey D’s and Burger King to start visiting the reservations.

6563: Wrapping The News.

News digestion in a MultiCultClassics Monologue…

• Two all-beef patties special sauce lettuce cheese pickles onions in a soft flour tortilla. Mickey D’s has unleashed the Snack Wrap Mac—the innards of a Big Mac rolled into a tortilla—in Canadian test markets. Can’t help but think the McR&D folks are inherently lazy. Every “innovation” seems to essentially involve adding a patty or repurposing the existing grill debris. Why not just dump everything into a blender for McPuree?

• President Barack Obama apologized for a joke he made on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. While discussing bowling, Obama quipped his skills were “like Special Olympics or something.” He later called Special Olympics Chairman Tim Shriver to offer his regrets. Obama probably meant to say his skills were like McR&D workers or something.

• Sony will impose a one-year salary freeze for its full-time Japanese employees. The workers will probably set up PrayStations to hope PlayStations lead to PayStations.

• Ex-New York Governor Eliot Spitzer was interviewed for CNN, saying he worked the past 12 months repairing his marriage and family life. Spitzer remarked, “I have spent a year with my family—with my wonderful and amazing and forgiving wife and three daughters —and we’ll rebuild those relationships, and hope to do that as time goes on.” His wife probably imposed a freeze on high-priced hookers.

• Walmart is paying out bonuses to its workers, as the retailer enjoyed a profitable year. Let’s hope the employees stimulate the economy by spending the extra loot on Snack Wrap Macs, PlayStations and Prostitutes.

6331: Stimulating Stimulus Plans And Hustlers.

Talking trash in a MultiCultClassics Monologue…

• Adult entertainment moguls Larry Flynt and Joe Francis have asked Washington for a $5 billion federal bailout. “The government’s handing out money to the auto industry,” whined Girls Gone Wild producer Francis. “Why shouldn’t it hand some to an industry the nation could not live without?” Perhaps they can get support from former New York Governor Eliot Spitzer, ex-Senator Larry Craig and even former President Bill Clinton.

• Britain’s Prince Harry apologized for making racist remarks about Pakistanis and people of Arab descent in a 2006 video. The offenses included referring to someone as “our little paki friend” (paki is an offensive term to people from Pakistan) and calling someone wearing a headscarf a “raghead.” Racism from the Royal Family? Why, it’s positively mortifying.

• A Brooklyn woman is suing Tito Jackson, claiming that he’s her father. “He told me he was my father when I was 17,” said the woman. “He didn’t want it public. … He was ashamed.” It’s not clear if he was ashamed to be her father, or ashamed to be Tito Jackson.

6304: Surveying Scoundrels.

The New York Post conducts an online survey to name the biggest scoundrel. Meanwhile, FRS says a recent survey of FRS.com customers showed “93 percent of the respondents indicated they prefer FRS over Red Bull.” Um, if you survey your own damned customers, shouldn’t you get a 100 percent preference rating?

6125: Assorted Losers.

TGIF with a MultiCultClassics Monologue…

• Former New York Governor Eliot Spitzer won’t face any legal problems for his escapades with prostitutes. A federal probe revealed Spitzer did not use public or campaign money for his call girls, so he won’t be charged. However, hookers will continue to charge him big time.

• The head honcho of the new Delta-Northwest Airlines recently declared customers could expect business as usual after the merger. Now the airline announced a fresh $15 fee to check one bag. Yep, business as usual.

• Wendy’s reported a 3Q profits loss, attributing the drop to its takeover by the owner of Arby’s. Regardless, the results are waaaaay worse than fast food rivals’ profits.

• Fidelity announced intentions to cut 1,300 jobs. Wonder if the employees know how to rollover their 401(k) plans.

• Anheuser-Busch reported a 3Q profit loss, attributing the drop to its pending sale to InBev. It’s also probably related to constantly running those annoyingly shitty “Drinkability” commercials.

5660: Headlines And Heads.

Heading through the news with a MultiCultClassics Monologue…

• A visitor to the new Madame Tussauds wax museum in Berlin tried to take home a souvenir—the head of the Hitler figure on display. The guy managed to rip the head off, allegedly to protest the exhibit. The headhunter was apprehended and charged, so don’t expect the head to pop up on eBay. Wonder if the museum will hire neo-Nazis to serve as security.

• The family of baseball legend Babe Ruth is seeking to have the star’s No. 3 permanently retired across Major League Baseball, and they’re pointing to Ruth’s humanitarian efforts for support. The family claims Ruth was a civil rights activist, barnstorming with Negro League players during the off-season. Additionally, Ruth signed a famous letter in 1942 denouncing Hitler and the slaughter of Jews. Maybe someone should redesign the Madame Tussauds exhibit to portray the Babe knocking off Hitler’s head with a baseball bat.

• Ashley Dupré, the call girl behind the infamous incident involving ex-New York Governor Eliot Spitzer, dropped her $10 million lawsuit against Girls Gone Wild founder Joe Francis. Dupré was seeking compensation for Francis’ use of footage that featured her. Francis declared he feels “vindicated” and added, “I’m having a terrific July Fourth.” Dupré probably realized hookers rarely succeed in conflicts with pimps.

• Gay and lesbian marchers in Budapest, Hungary, were pelted with eggs, bottles and rocks by dozens of protestors. Cops used water cannons and tear gas to disperse the protestors, who also hurled Molotov cocktails and set a police van on fire. Ironically, the event was titled, “Dignity March.”

Venus Williams won her fifth Wimbledon title and seventh Grand Slam championship after beating sister Serena Williams. Venus Williams is the 10th woman to win five Wimbledon singles titles and only the third in the 40-year history of the Open era after Martina Navratilova and Steffi Graf.

5538: Fuzzy Clarifications.

Setting the record straight in a MultiCultClassics Monologue…

• Sharon Stone is apparently not happy with the apology issued by Christian Dior. After remarking the earthquakes in China had a karmic flavor, the actress backpedaled along with the fashion advertiser. But on Thursday, Stone claimed her Dior-delivered apology had been edited, much like the original offending video clip. When initially contacted by Dior chief executive Sidney Toledano, Stone said, “I talked to Sidney and I said: ‘Let’s get serious here. You guys know me very well. I’m not going to apologize. I’m certainly not going to apologize for something that isn’t real and true—not for face creams.’” Stone wanted to clarify the statement versus say she was sorry. A statement released to The New York Times included, “I am deeply saddened that a 10-second poorly edited film clip has besmirched my reputation of over 20 years of charitable services on behalf of international charities. My intention is to be of service to the Chinese people.” Upon viewing the video, Stone also remarked, “I had absolutely no intention of saying that, which I did say. … And now, looking at it on the tape, I look like a complete ding-dong.” Wonder if she’s viewed a tape of Basic Instinct 2, which also warrants an apology.

• The New York Post claimed former New York Governor Eliot Spitzer might be tempted to write a book to clarify his infamous ouster. When someone offered to be his biographer, Eliot remarked, “If anyone writes it, I’ll write it myself and correct the lies.” Oh, sure he would. He’d actually be better off having Sharon Stone handle the job.

5410: Worlds Gone Wild.

Exposing deals in a MultiCultClassics Monologue…

• Ashley Alexandra Dupre, the call girl linked to former New York Governor Eliot Spitzer, is suing Girls Gone Wild creator Joe Francis for $10 million. Dupre is charging Francis with using her image to sell videos, even though she allegedly permitted Francis to film her in 2003. Perhaps this will inspire a spinoff series: When Call Girls Attack.

• The Wm. Wrigley Jr. Company, the maker of assorted gums, and Mars, the maker of M&Ms and more, announced plans to merge the companies. “Bringing together these iconic, world-class companies combines Wrigley’s strengths with the deep resources and proven brand-building savvy of Mars and will result in a powerful force for innovation and growth in the global confectionery marketplace,” said Warren Buffett, whose company will provide funding for Mars. Um, what are Wrigley’s strengths—the Doublemint Twins?

• General Motors announced plans to dump 3,500 workers because of lousy sales with pickup trucks and SUVs. A GM executive said, “With rising fuel prices, a softening economy and a downward trend on current and future market demand for full-size trucks, a significant adjustment was needed to align our production with market realities.” Since when has GM been in touch with reality?

5252: Service With A Smile.

Daily Serving of Nonsense in a MultiCultClassics Monologue…

• Now New York Governor David Paterson admits he may have improperly used campaign funds to pay for a tryst with an ex-girlfriend, listing the expenditure as “constituent services.” Wonder how former Governor Eliot Spitzer labeled his encounters in expense reports.

• A new study shows a happy marriage can lead to good blood pressure. Has anyone conducted blood pressure checks for former New York Governor Eliot Spitzer and Governor David Paterson?

• Hold off on ordering the Girls Gone Wild video featuring Spitzer’s girlfriend Ashley Dupré. Seems the lass was only 17 when the original taping took place. Dupré’s lawyer said, “It was because she was underage that [Girls Gone Wild founder Joe Francis] sent her home on a Greyhound bus back to North Carolina. It would be outrageous at the very least to play the video of an underage female on the Internet.” Oh, heaven forbid.

• Delta Air Lines plans to offer voluntary severance payouts to 30,000 employees—over half of its total work force. Which means that passengers will have significantly fewer idiots to complain to about the lousy service.

• The Rev. Al Sharpton wants the NFL to cancel its Hall of Fame game scheduled to take place in Ohio on August 3—in order to protest the alleged police misconduct in Canton. The game is slated to pit the Indianapolis Colts against the Washington Redskins. Actually, it might be more interesting to pit the NFL players against the violent and bruising Canton cops.

5245: Men Behaving Badly.

Bad Boys in a MultiCultClassics Monologue…

• Girls Gone Wild CEO Joe Francis initially offered Eliot Spitzer’s girlfriend Ashley Dupré $1 million to appear in a video, but pulled the deal when he realized he already had footage of the infamous woman. Dupre had apparently appeared in Girls Gone Wild material five years ago. “We have some really great footage of Ashley,” said Francis. “There’s a very good shower scene that alone is worth the money. … [She was] a total ‘GGW’ groupie. She was really into girl-on-girl action and she was all over the guys, too.” Eliot Spitzer has probably pre-ordered the re-release videos.

• Detroit mayor Kwame Kilpatrick nixed a City Council call for his resignation. “You take a whole day to discuss an issue like this,” said Kilpatrick. “My reaction is: This is over. It has no effect. It’s not binding. Let’s get back to work.” He then probably had dinner with Senator Larry Craig and Eliot Spitzer.

• Busta Rhymes was sentenced to three years’ probation for beating up a former driver and a fan. The rapper will also perform 10 days of community service, pay a $1,250 fine and participate in a drunken driving program. Rhymes insisted the sentence won’t be a challenge and declared, “I have no trouble being a good dude because that’s what I am.” Dude.

5237: Dig It.

From Newsweek, March 24, 2008.

5235: Oh, Man.

From The Chicago Tribune…

Don’t drag your wife into your mess. Be. A. Man.

By Katha Pollitt, a columnist for The Nation magazine

Just once I’d like to see a male politician caught in a sex scandal stand up there at the news conference all by himself. You want to be an alpha male with extra helpings of testosterone and appetites that cannot be denied? Fine, but if you get caught, Be. A. Man. Don’t drag your wife in front of the cameras to prove how strong your marriage is. Practice saying these words: “No, darling, I could never live with myself if I let you humiliate yourself in public to help my career. I know people always want to blame the wife, but this is all my fault. Besides, I don’t want our children to think marriage means wives have to put up with their husband’s crap – that’s what prostitutes are for! No, wait…”

Silda Wall Spitzer looked so sad and stricken standing next to her husband, then-New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer, as he issued a brief statement apologizing to his “family” and “the public” -- in effect acknowledging the truth of revelations that he was Client 9, who had paid a prostitution ring called the Emperors Club VIP for (very expensive) sex. Has nothing changed since 1969, when poor Joan Kennedy faced reporters with Ted after Chappaquiddick? In just the last decade we’ve had, among others, Suzanne Craig, Wendy Vitter, Dina McGreevey -- and, of course, Hillary Clinton. I’m not saying the wife has to divorce her ethically challenged spouse. But just once I’d like to see her skip the news conference and fly off to Paris instead.

People may use words like “stoic” and “dignified” to describe the stand-by-your-man act, but really what they’re thinking is either “doormat” or “enabler.” (Dr. Laura Schlessinger, on the “Today” show, to a startled co-host Meredith Vieira: “When the wife does not focus in on the needs and the feelings sexually, personally, to make him feel like a man, to make him feel like a success, to make him feel like her hero, he’s very susceptible to the charm of some other woman making him feel what he needs. And these days, women don’t spend a lot of time thinking about how they can give their men what they need.” This of Silda Spitzer, who gave up her career to facilitate her husband’s political ambitions! If the New York Post is correct that his use of prostitutes goes back 10 years, he started when his wife was raising three small children -- nice.)

With Silda’s ashen face still vividly in the public mind, this might not be the best moment for male bon vivants like Alan Dershowitz and Bill Maher to pooh-pooh prostitution as a trivial private matter that no one really cares about – it’s just how men are. And probably I would be more sympathetic another time to the notion, expressed by some young feminists and professional sex workers, that the real victim of this scandal is “Kristen.”

Some have described Spitzer’s fall as Shakespearean, but the character he most resembles is not a tragic hero like Lear or Macbeth; it’s the puritanical zealot Angelo from “Measure for Measure,” who sets out to enforce Vienna’s long-disused death penalty for extramarital sex:

You may not so extenuate his offence,

For I have had such faults; but rather tell me,

When I, that censure him, do so offend,

Let mine own judgment pattern out my death,

And nothing come in partial. Sir, he must die.

Angelo is a lustful hypocrite, far worse than the trollops and roisterers and young lovers he condemns, and he’s eventually caught in a sting. Since the play is a comedy, his only punishment is loss of office, and marriage to the woman he jilted and who loves him despite all.

Spitzer could do a lot worse.

Meanwhile, his downfall means joy on Wall Street and, no doubt, satisfaction in the White House too -- another Democratic pol brought low, whether or not through Republican skulduggery, as some suspect. Hillary Clinton loses a superdelegate but perhaps picks up some votes from women fed up with male politicians. And there’s a promotion for Lt. Gov. David Paterson, a well-liked liberal Democrat who’s not only black but legally blind. Only in America!

5227: Wal-Mart And Other Prostitutes.

Modern Marketing in a MultiCultClassics Monologue…

• A Wal-Mart store in Dearborn, Michigan, has gone out of its way to appeal to local Arab-Americans, stocking up to 550 items specifically catering to the audience. Store managers insist, however, that they won’t undercut the neighborhood merchants in a community that has traditionally supported its own. An analyst remarked, “Wal-Mart is a little kinder and gentler than they were 10 years ago. They are fierce competitors … but I don’t think they’re trying to do a scorched earth policy.” Mostly because the retailer pretty much owns Earth.

• The call girl involved with former New York Governor Eliot Spitzer is irked over all the media outlets publishing photos without her consent. Her lawyer declared he’d take “all steps that we deem necessary or appropriate to protect Ms. Dupre from any unwarranted exploitation of her name, picture, voice or likeness for purposes of profit.” How typical for a call girl to complain about not getting paid. Maybe Wal-Mart should open a store catering specifically to high-priced hookers.
