Essay 465

The Chicago Reader devotes its cover story to the Illinois Minuteman Project. The chapter’s founder is Rosanna Pulido, who happens to be the daughter of two Americans of Mexican descent. “I felt like I had to take leadership on this particular [immigration] issue because I am of Mexican descent, but it’s proved to be a joke,” Pulido said. “I’ve been interviewed by Spanish newspapers and TV, and they’ve said to me, ‘Why are you betraying the Mexican people?’ And they call me a racist. It’s not about race. It’s about American sovereignty, it’s about enforcing the laws on the books.”
