Ebony auction nears
Affordable fashions to go days before big-name event

By Sandra Guy

A double-breasted faux leopard pony coat and a Claude Montana burgundy leather coat are among the fashions of Ebony Fashion Fair creator Eunice W. Johnson to be auctioned Sept. 16 by Chicago’s Leslie Hindman Auctioneers.

A tag sale of some of Johnson’s more affordable fashions will be held Sept. 11-15, along with an exhibition of her collection, at Leslie Hindman Auctioneers, 1338 W. Lake St.

The auction of the more expensive fashions—a total of 146 pieces—will be held at 5 p.m. Sept. 16 at the auction house.

Johnson, who died Jan. 3, came up with the name “Ebony” for the flagship magazine, and was known as an impeccably dressed Southern lady who spent millions each year in Paris and Milan on clothing for the Ebony Fashion Fairs. The fashion fair tours, which traveled 180 cities nationwide, were canceled in fall 2009, spring 2010 and for fall 2010, but the struggling Johnson Publishing Co. says it remains committed to the Fashion Fair brand.

The collection being auctioned includes dresses and evening gowns from Bill Blass, Bonwit Teller, Galanos, Gianni Versace, Halston, Oscar de la Renta, Carolina Herrera, and dresses, skirts and jackets by Thea Porter, Yves Saint Laurent, Zandra Rhodes and Jean Paul Gaultier.

Other items to be auctioned are jewelry, boots, shawls, scarves, belts, sunglasses and wardrobe trunks.
