Actually, I think that was a refernce to the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City. Those clothes were strictly for athletes in those days, and Panthers always wore black leather jackets.
Understood the reference timing, but Tommie Smith and John Carlos were making a Black Power statement — not a Black Panthers statement. Plus, the two were wearing their track suit jackets.
